Growing tomatoes in pots

Firstly they’re easy! Get a container (if possible and ideally about 45cm wide), a bag of compost and an established tomato plant. Plant, water, keep it watered, bingo tomatoes!

The plants going into these pots can be grown yourself from seed or a shop bough, as long as they’re 15cm or so when planted into the pot, they should be fine. Read my quick guide to planting from seed here.

I think growing tomatoes in pots is probably the most convenient way of growing tomatoes.

As well as simple to setup they’re versatile. They can be used in any size garden, whether on a patio or if space is an issue a balcony can usually accommodate a pot or two!
Growing tomatoes in pots isn’t just limited to pots on the ground. How about growing some trailing varieties in hanging baskets!

Another great advantage is pots (depending on size) are moveable, meaning if you get sunlight in different spots throughout the day you have the ability to get you tomatoes basking all day long! Growing your tomato plants in containers also keeps them off the ground and further away from garden pests.

One downside to plants grown in containers is they do need to be watered more regularly and can be more prone to drying out, so keep a good watering schedule.
